Eliminating Hot Spots in Your Home
If your AC is operating and set at your desired temperature but you find an area of your home that is significantly warmer than the rest of the building, you have a hot spot. This can be due to a few different factors, and there are fixes you can apply in each case. Let’s look at some solutions you can use to get rid of hot spots.
Make Sure It’s Not Due to the Sun
Getting a lot of sun exposure can cause parts of your house to heat up significantly. Try replacing your curtains and drapes with ones made of a material more suitable for reflecting the sun and keeping the heat out. The sun alone is capable of increasing the temperature inside your home by several degrees, and that can cause hot spots.
Unclog or Reroute Ducts
If the sun is not the cause of your hot spot, then there’s potentially an airflow issue in the area. Check and see that cool air is coming into the space where you are experiencing the hot spot. If not, this could be a case of clogged ducts. If you are living in an older house, you may need to have a technician check the integrity of the duct system.
Install Zoned AC Components
One of the most convenient solutions to a hot spot is the installation of zoned cooling equipment. This will involve putting electronically controlled dampers into your ductwork. These can adjust the amount of conditioned air flowing into any given area or zone. This arrangement will also require more than one thermostat, one for each zone. Such an installation allows you to control cooling in different parts of the house and adjust accordingly for the room with the hot spot.
Install a Ductless Air Conditioner
If your hot spot is in a room addition or an area of your home such as the garage, the attic or a porch, you may want to consider installing a ductless air conditioner. These are easily placed in an inconspicuous part of the room and do not require you to burden your central AC system in your attempt to cool the hot spot.
